The BWA are striving to encourage a profession of British Archaeology which is fully able to offer archaeologists of both sexes a fulfilling and flexible career. Women and men should feel equally supported throughout their training, both in the field and within higher education institutions and have demonstrably equal access to job opportunities and promotion. In the near future access to part-time working and maternity and paternity benefits should be commonplace. We believe that both the process of action and the resolution of these challenges will create a stronger, more dynamic environment for all. The BWA was established to tackle the unique challenges faced by archaeologists, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, sexuality or disabilty.

Many women need our support. Women are experiencing discriminatory comments, indeed around 70% of women who responded to our survey have either had comments made directly to them, or were unsure whether they had, or know others who have had comments made to them. Or, out of every 10 female archaeologists you meet, 7 will have had either direct or indirect experiences of discrimination! Nobody feels this is acceptable. Survey reponses were over 80% in favour of such a group, to include men and have a women's only forum, which will be facilitated without charge to the group by BAJR http://bajr.org. Our grateful thanks to David Connolly.
A steering committee was founded to guide the group in the early formation stages and to implement both short and long terms goals. This is a non-profit making organisation yet we need a financial base to provide membership cards and badges, promote the group and maintain the website etc. If you believe in our goals please support us, either through joining us or just a donation!
