This is a summary of our meetings both of the steering committee (which our regular steering committee members based in the north of England attend as regularly as possible, whilst keeping in almost continual contact via email re. the group, and our issues and priorities) and of our Regional Networking Meetings (which the broader membership and interested non-members attend).

Third Regional Network Meeting
Department of Archaeology, University of Cambridge
Present: Anne and Jo
Anne presented our new talk incorporating the history of women in Archaeology and our survey results, which was met with some astonishment. A superb turnout of around 15 which increased as the free wine and nibbles came out after the paper, as provided by the Cambridge department - our grateful thanks to them. This enabled informal discussions for almost an hour. Jo and Anne spoke to as many people as possible to gain thoughts and opinions on BWA. There was a concern voiced that some women couldn’t make the meeting as they had childcare issues. We know the feeling! Anne is a single parent of two and arranged her care in advance, travelling from Manchester to Cambridge and back that day to be involved. Childcare and the role of women as primary carers is one of our key concerns. It’s also why so much of our work is done from home, via e-mail, and often at ridiculous hours of the morning!

Second Regional Networking Meeting
University of Liverpool
Present: 14 from field, academic, postgraduate and local government sectors
In hindsight we feel it was a bit haphazard on our part largely due to a last minute change in venue, which threw us somewhat! In future we’ll always begin with a presentation so that everybody is introduced to what we’re about. The meeting saw good discussion, largely focussed on problems specific to fieldworkers as evidenced in our survey.
